The territory of La Alcarria is located in the north of the province of Cuenca. It extends for 2,500 square km and is home to about 12,000 inhabitants who live in just over 50 population hubs in about 40 municipalities. Here we can find products related to the main local economic activity: agriculture. Featured products are quality olive oil (in the villages of Tinajas and Valdeolivas) and the wonderful wine that has contributed greatly to the development of tourism in the area, with the organization of visits to some of the prestigious local wine cellars (the town of Caracenilla).Wicker is another profitable crop worth mentioning. It is no accident that 80% of Spanish wicker is grown in the province of Cuenca, distinguishing such towns as Villaconejos de Trabaque, Priego and Cañaveras. These traditional villages delight visitors with the ability and skill of local artisans, and with the products that can be found here.
Local gastronomy also offers welcome surprises to all those who visit. Sheep herding, traditional in the area, has made the delicious local lamb famous. In Caracenilla and Huete it is possible to try “cordero a la miel” (lamb with honey), a dish made with denominación de origen (top-quality, locally-made) honey from the Alcarria towns of Huelves, Torralba and Buendía. We can also find extraordinary denominación de origen cheeses made with sheep milk in the towns of Caracenilla, Huete and Torrejoncillo del Rey, renowned and sold on a national level. Enjoy nature in the mountains of Altomira, practice water sports in Buendía Reservoir or hike along the PR-CU 40 Trail (Saceda-Trasierra)—just some of the activities that can be found in the area. There is an important civil, military and religious heritage in this area, scattered throughout its various villages.
