Alarcón is a town of utmost interest to tourists that has been declared an Artistic Historical Complex. It features what is considered to be the medieval center with the best defensive system of those still in existence in Spain. The village was the site of prehistoric, Roman and Muslim settlements, and was conquered by King Alfonso the 8th. An idea of its past importance can be derived from the fact that it was home to five parish churches, four of which are still standing. A stroll through the streets of Alarcón is invigorating and provides a detailed peek into how a medieval town would have been. The castle, which has been totally restored, is now a Parador Nacional de Turismo (quality hotel in a historic setting).
